Reverse Glass Painting With Siege Scene And Military Encampment, 18th Century, Venice (?)
Reverse glass painting with siege scene and military encampment, 18th century, Venice (?)
Dimensions: 22.5 x 29 cm
Reverse glass painting depicting a siege scene before a fortified city, with cavaliers, warriors and tents of a military encampment. A figure placed upon the walls appears to display or throw a severed head, a dramatic detail evoking the atmosphere of chivalric or theatrical narratives inspired by Torquato Tasso’s Gerusalemme Liberata.
The work belongs to the second half of the 18th century and may be associated with Italian production, probably Venetian. The taste for imaginary architecture, military subjects and theatrical composition recalls decorative models diffused in Northern Italy during the late 18th century.
The painting is executed in reverse on the back of the glass according to the reverse glass painting technique.
Excellent state of preservation.
Dark wood frame with gilt filet. The reverse is closed by an old wooden backing panel.
