Portrait Of A Gentleman, School Of Nicolaes Maes, Dutch Republic, C. 1680
Signature Nicolas Maes on the balustrade
Oil on oak panel
29 × 39 cm
with frame 40.5 × 51 cm
Half-length portrait of a notable from the Dutch Republic, arranged with red curtain, column and distant landscape according to a formula highly appreciated in late 17th-century Dutch portraiture.
The black costume, high white collar, gloves and signet ring indicate a man of rank, likely belonging to the patrician, mercantile or civic administrative classes. Around 1680, in a republic still powerful through maritime trade, finance and colonial companies, such portraits affirmed status and authority without excessive display.
In composition, scale and formal vocabulary, the painting is close to the mature portrait manner of Nicolaes Maes (Dordrecht, 1634 – Amsterdam, 1693), who began his career in the workshop of Rembrandt van Rijn (Leiden, 1606 – Amsterdam, 1669) before becoming one of the most sought-after portraitists of his generation.
From photographic examination and under ultraviolet light, the signature on the balustrade appears old; the attribution, however, remains under study.
