Portrait Miniature Of A Young Man, Signed M. Chavelon (?), Circa 1835–1840 , Cm 17x13
Portrait miniature of a young man, signed M. Chavelon (?), circa 1835–1840
Dimensions with frame: 17 × 13 cm; inner oval: 9.5 × 8 cm.
Frame in veneered wood with pronounced grain, probably rosewood or burr wood, with an inner oval bronze mount.
Oval miniature depicting a young man, executed with a refined technique and careful attention to the modelling of the face and the soft rendering of the flesh tones. The work bears the signature “M. Chavelon” (legible but partially worn), to be interpreted with caution and consistent with miniaturist production of the first half of the 19th century.
The costume allows a dating around 1835–1840. The dark jacket is worn open at the chest and is paired with a white shirt featuring a still high collar, already less rigid than the models of the 1820s. The dark cravat is tied high, with a softer construction, reflecting the gradual evolution of men’s fashion during the 1830s.
Particularly significant is the type of facial hair, consisting of slender, elongated sideburns, carefully defined along the cheeks, with no moustache and no beard on the chin. This style, which becomes widespread from the late 1830s onward, progressively replaces the completely clean-shaven face of earlier decades and provides a reliable element for dating.
Taken as a whole, the appearance of the sitter belongs to the world of the urban bourgeoisie of the second half of the 1830s, a transitional moment toward a more natural and less rigidly constructed masculine image. The fine pictorial quality of the miniature and the sober elegance of its frame suggest an object intended for a patron attentive to refinement and detail.
