Royal Coat Of Arms Of Denmark With Order Of The Elephant, 17th Century Engraving
Royal Coat of Arms of Denmark with Order of the Elephant, 17th century engraving
Original antique engraving, printed from an engraved plate with visible plate mark. It depicts the composite coat of arms of the Denmark–Norway monarchy: the lions and hearts of Denmark, the lion with axe of Norway, and the dynastic quarters of Schleswig, Holstein and Oldenburg, all beneath the royal crown.
At the base appears the elephant, emblem of the Order of the Elephant, the highest Danish chivalric order, traditionally reserved for sovereigns and a very limited circle of leading European figures.
Baroque composition with allegorical figures and attributes of power and navigation, typical of official publications of the late 17th century. Leaf from a book, with text on the reverse.
