Portrait of a Woman with a Double-Ruffled Collar, circa 1830–1840

Black pencil and stump on paper
Italian School
Sheet dimensions: 29.5 × 24 cm

A delicate portrait of a woman executed in black pencil and stump. Her large eyes, soft cheeks, and gentle smile lend the young woman a measured and serene presence.

The hairstyle—curls gathered by a wide ribbon—and the costume allow the drawing to be dated to around 1830–1840. Of particular interest is the collar, formed by two overlapping rows of ruffles and gathers, fastened under the chin by a small dark bow—a detail characteristic of women’s fashion of the period.

The artist focuses her attention on the face, rendered with delicate chiaroscuro strokes, while the torso is suggested with a few quick, confident strokes that effectively define its form.

The drawing retains its original protective tissue paper and is mounted on the reverse onto a second sheet of paper. It is in good overall condition, with normal signs of aging consistent with its age.
