18th-century Engraving—portrait Of Louis, Grand Dauphin Of France—by P. Drevet After H. Rigaud

Antique copperplate engraving depicting Louis of France (1661–1711), known as “The Grand Dauphin,” son of Louis XIV and father of the Duke of Burgundy. The prince is depicted in three-quarter view in armor, set within an oval stone frame surmounting his coat of arms as Dauphin of France. Technical details:
  • Original artist: Painted by Hyacinthe Rigaud (H. Rigaud pinx. inscribed in the lower left corner of the pedestal).
  • Engraver: Pierre Drevet (1663–1738) (P. Drevet sculp.). Original matrix engraved in 1707.
  • Edition: Third state (State III/III), published in Paris by Honoré Thomas Bligny (in Paris at Bligny, Painter, Gilder, and Glassmaker, Lance Bearer to the King, Cour du Manège in the Tuileries), dating from the late 18th century (circa 1780).
  • Coloring: Historic watercolor coloring. The details of the color highlights (red cloak, blue cord of the Order of the Holy Spirit) scrupulously respect the delicacy of the lines in the underlying intaglio engraving.
  • Total dimensions (including frame): 47 x 58 cm.
Condition:
  • The sheet retains its margins; the indentation left by the pressing of the copper plate is visible along the edges.
  • Period paper showing signs of oxidation and natural, uniform browning due to age (scattered foxing visible in the white margins, with no major damage to the central subject).
  • Sold in its gilded wooden frame
