Three academic male studies – nude figure, drapery and bearded head, mid 19th century
Pencil on paper, including one sheet on green paper with white heightening.
Dimensions: 33 x 28 cm; 29 x 23 cm; approx. 29 x 23 cm.
Set of three academic figure studies focusing on the male body, drawn from life and most likely intended as workshop sketches, possibly used as preparatory material for a larger painted composition.
The first drawing depicts a standing male nude, built with a light and controlled pencil line, with careful attention to proportions and anatomical structure. The second sheet is dedicated to drapery, probably a study of men’s trousers, with an accurate observation of folds and fabric tension.
The third drawing, executed on green paper, represents a bearded male head together with a hand holding a hat. The use of toned paper and white highlights reflects a typical 19th-century academic practice. The hairstyle and beard suggest a plausible dating to the mid-century period, circa 1830–1860.
Overall good condition, with normal signs of age.
