These two original ink drawings depict battleships under way, executed with remarkable precision in the rendering of the superstructures, armament and construction details. The quality of the line reveals Pierre Leconte’s exceptional skill as a draughtsman and his profound knowledge of naval architecture.

Appointed Official Painter of the French Navy in 1924, Pierre Leconte took part in the celebrated scientific expeditions led by Commander Jean-Baptiste Charcot aboard the Pourquoi-Pas ?. In 1928, he also joined the expedition organized to search for Roald Amundsen, who disappeared during his attempt to rescue Umberto Nobile’s Arctic expedition. A distinguished naval historian, Leconte published in 1932 the monumental Répertoire des navires de guerre français, an inventory of more than seven thousand French warships.

These two drawings come from the dispersal of Pierre Leconte’s studio archive. They reflect his activity as both a draughtsman and naval historian, revealing the quality of his line and his deep understanding of naval architecture.
