A beautiful Venetian painting from the mid-16th century depicting Saint Jerome meditating in the desert.
This extraordinary figure, who is extremely captivating and one of the Four Fathers of the Church, has captured the interest of all the great masters of classical painting, who have depicted him in various versions, yet always imbued with the utmost sacredness—a hieratic figure par excellence.
The saint is portrayed, as is traditional, nude and slightly in profile, with his gaze turned toward the Crucifix, his left hand on his chest, and his right hand resting on the open book of the Holy Scriptures. In the background of the landscape, the silhouette of a lion—his unmistakable iconographic attribute—can be glimpsed. Behind him hangs the red cardinal’s hat.
The painting is in good condition and comes complete with a beautiful antique lacquered box frame with a gilded border.
