Important Openwork Ceremonial Basket in Saxon Porcelain – Carl Thieme Potschappel Style, Late 19th Century
A lovely and substantial hard-paste porcelain basket with handles (or table basket), distinguished by its exquisitely delicate openwork basketwork.
With a poly-lobed shape, its sides feature a remarkable interlaced design of openwork latticework, enhanced by an elegant frieze of golden waves at the base and hand-painted floral cartouches on the sides. The double handle mimics intertwined strands, outlined with gold fillets and tied at the top with a delicate celadon-green ribbon.

Painted decoration
The interior of the basket features a superb polychrome floral design depicting a bouquet of natural flowers (roses, tulips, and wildflowers), executed with great attention to detail and a sense of freshness. The color palette is vibrant and typical of Saxony’s taste for “Deutsche Blumen” (German flowers). The upper border and the edges of the latticework are accented with refined gilding.

Markings and Identification
On the underside of the base is a blue underglaze painted mark depicting two crossed swords surmounted by a crown (accompanied by a gold-overglaze dot or dew motif). This mark follows the tradition of late 19th-century Saxon manufacturers (Dresden / Potschappel – Carl Thieme), drawing on the prestigious aesthetic codes of Meissen.
