Set Of Two Court Calendars With Decorated Spines And Gilt Edges, 1822 And 1827
A fine set of two official almanacs from the Restoration period, printed for the exclusive use of the Royal Family and His Majesty’s Household. These precious little pocket-sized volumes (in-32) offer a unique historical account of the organization of the court during the reigns of Louis XVIII and Charles X. These two copies are distinguished by the high quality of their period bindings: both feature superb edges entirely gilded and smooth spines richly adorned with geometric patterns and romantic friezes executed in fine gold. - Contents: Complete ephemeris (position of the Sun, its rise and set, declination, phases of the Moon) and major historical dates (births of the Kings, Queens, Princes, and Princesses of Europe).
- Binding: Original olive-green full leather. The upper cover is adorned in the center with the large Royal Coat of Arms of France (three fleurs-de-lis surmounted by the royal crown, surrounded by laurel branches), framed by a delicate gilded scroll. The smooth spine is divided into panels by gold fillets, adorned with a fine hourglass or lattice pattern. Gilded edges.
- Condition: Binding well-preserved, gilding fresh. Slight signs of wear normal for its age.

- Binding: Full leather or period midnight-blue grained percaline, plain on the covers, embellished at the four corners with gilt metal fittings depicting a stylized fleur-de-lis. The smooth spine is superbly decorated along its entire length with a series of panels featuring diamond motifs and friezes of gilded interlacing. Gilded edges.
- Condition: Good overall condition; decorations on the spine are very crisp and lustrous; interior is very clean; slight scuffing on the edges.
