Circular Medallion In Pale Blue Jasperware Depicting An Allegorical Scene Of Venus And Love

An elegant circular medallion made of azure stoneware, emblematic of the famous Jasperware collection developed by Josiah Wedgwood in the late 18th century. The field features a delicate relief decoration in white bisque based on a neoclassical model attributed to the sculptor John Flaxman. The scene depicts an allegory of Venus and Love. The goddess, seated and draped in the classical style with her veil fluttering in the wind, holds a mirror in her hand as she faces Cupid (Love), who is kneeling before her.
This type of small medallion (7 cm) was traditionally intended for collection in a cabinet, set in precious boxes, or mounted as a brooch or neck medallion during the Directoire period or the 19th century.
