This print depicts Thérèse-Cunégonde Sobieska (“Madame the Electoral Duchess of Bavaria, Princess of Warsaw, daughter of the King of Poland”), dressed according to the strictest and most sumptuous standards of fashion at the court of Versailles. She wears an imposing “à la Fontange” hairstyle, a gown richly adorned with ruffles, lace, and gilded motifs, as well as a court coat with a long purple train lined with fur.
The engraving was published in Paris by Nicolas Bonnart (1637–1718), a famous engraver and print dealer on Rue Saint-Jacques, active during the reign of Louis XIV. He held the royal privilege to reproduce portraits of figures at court.
