Bronze Medallion Depicting A Profile Of Maximilien Robespierre, After David D’angers, 1835

A circular bronze medallion with a nuanced brown patina features a bust portrait in left-side profile of Maximilien de Robespierre (1758–1794).
This high-quality piece is a 19th-century edition based on the famous model created in 1835 by the sculptor Pierre-Jean David d’Angers (1788–1856). The iconic politician of the French Revolution is depicted wearing his characteristic curly wig, dressed in a high-collared buttoned coat and a fitted cravat.
The relief is vigorous and particularly meticulous in the details of the hair and drapery. The high-relief bust stands out magnificently against a smooth background that highlights the power of the profile. The medallion is signed “DAVID” and dated at the bottom beneath the bust. A mounting hole is present at the top.
The Artist and the Work:
Beginning in the 1830s, Pierre-Jean David d’Angers undertook an immense series of medallion portraits celebrating major contemporary and revolutionary historical, scientific, and political figures. His portrait of Robespierre is a classic of 19th-century French Romantic sculpture; several bronze and plaster copies are now carefully preserved in national collections, notably at the Musée Carnavalet in Paris and the Louvre Museum.
