Dish From The 1900 Paris World's Fair

Collectible circular plate made of lithographed sheet metal, produced for the 1900 Paris World's Fair.

The center of the plate features a rich polychrome composition titled “Paris World’s Fair 1900. General View.”. It depicts a superb, lively perspective of the capital, featuring the Paris Ferris Wheel (built specifically for the exposition), the palaces of the Champ-de-Mars, the Eiffel Tower, as well as a procession of horse-drawn carriages and pedestrians crossing the Seine. The marli (the plate’s border) features an elegant red background in the Napoleon III style, adorned with gilded foliage, volutes, and arabesques. It is punctuated by cartouches illustrating several iconic monuments of Paris and the exposition, each finely captioned:
  • The Cathedral (Notre-Dame de Paris)
  • The Russian Church (Saint Alexander Nevsky Cathedral)
  • The Trocadéro (Former Trocadéro Palace)
  • The Triumph of the Republic (Monument by Jules Dalou on Place de la Nation)
Condition: An authentic period piece in its original state, displaying a beautiful patina of age. Note: There are scattered traces of oxidation (primarily on the marli and the peripheral decoration) as well as slight wear on the lithograph, which attest to its authenticity and history. The central decorations and inscriptions remain clearly legible.
