A Collection Of Almanacs And New Year's Gifts For The Year 1778

An exceptional and charming set of pocket-sized books from the late 18th century, published in Paris in the year 1778 (M. DCC. LXXVIII).
These precious court and popular booklets offer a fascinating historical account of administrative, religious, and geographical life during the reign of Louis XVI. This collection notably includes:
  • The Royal Almanac for the year 1778: Printed in Paris by Le Breton, the King’s chief printer. A classic of the Ancien Régime administration bearing the regulatory notation “With the King’s Privilege.”
  • Les Étrennes Mignonnes, Curieuses et Utiles: Published in Paris by Claude-Jacques-Charles Durand (rue du Foin). This copy is complete with its very interesting fold-out geographical and road maps, enhanced with period colors (watercolor outlines). Notably, it features a map of the “Environs of Paris” that is extremely detailed for its time, as well as a map of “Christian France / Ecclesiastical France.”
  • The Court Calendar: Taken from the Ephemeris, containing the position of the sun, the phases of the moon, as well as a list of the births of the Kings, Queens, Princes, and Princesses of Europe. Printed for the Royal Family.

In good overall condition for works of this period that were handled daily. Period bindings; interiors are fresh with a few scattered, normal foxing spots. The fold-out maps are well preserved, with their original colors retaining a lovely vibrancy.
