History Of The Revolutions In France And The City Of Paris, 1789 And 1790

A precious and rare copy of "History of the Revolutions of France and the City of Paris", a major and captivating historical work written in the heat of the moment at the very beginning of the French Revolution. Written by the famous journalist and patriotic printer Louis-Marie Prudhomme and the brilliant pamphleteer Élysée Loustalot (chief editor of the legendary newspaper Les Révolutions de Paris). This vivid and extremely detailed account offers a unique, “accurate” account of “everything remarkable that has taken place in Paris, Versailles, and the provinces since July 12, 1789.” The work is famous for its thorough documentation and its passionate tone, featuring a striking revolutionary epigraph on the title page: “Horrible humans, tyrants of the people, vanish—your reign is over!”.
  • Authors: Louis-Marie Prudhomme and Élysée Loustalot.
  • Edition: Fourth Edition (revised and expanded with numerous facts, memorable anecdotes, and salient details not previously published).
  • Place and Publisher: In Paris, at the Palais-Royal, at the Booksellers of Novelties.
  • Publication Dates:
    • Volume One: M. DCC. LXXXIX (1789)
    • Volume Two: M. DCC. XC (1790)
  • Frontispiece illustration: Features a beautiful historical intaglio engraving (carved by Levacher) depicting the “ Siege of the Bastille, taken in two and a half hours, on July 14, 1789, in Paris at Goujon’s in the Palais Royal”.
  • Binding: Period binding in full marbled calfskin or sheepskin. Spined back richly decorated with gilded panels featuring floral motifs and neoclassical urns. Title label in brown morocco leather with gold lettering "REVOLUTION / 1789". Gold roulettes on the edges.
  • Condition: A fine collector’s copy, sturdy and in very good condition. The binding displays a beautiful patina from use; the head and corner caps are slightly rubbed, and there are small, discreet wear marks on the spine leather that are not significant. Fresh interior, text clearly legible, period paper with original margins, a few scattered foxing spots—entirely normal for a work from this turbulent period when paper quality varied greatly.
  • in-8, 424 pages + 104 pages
