Bernard Le Bovier de Fontenelle (1657-1757) was Corneille's nephew. After unsuccessful attempts in the theater, he was recognized as a popularizer of science. He entered the French Academy, then became permanent secretary of the Academy of Sciences and the Academy of Inscriptions.
