Almanac Collection For The Year 1785: Royal Almanac, Court Calendar, And Mignonne's New Year's Gifts

A precious and rare volume from the Louis XVI era, bringing together three major almanacs from the year 1785 in a single binding. This type of composite volume was frequently commissioned by prominent figures of the Ancien Régime to bring together their daily reference materials (administration, court life, science, and geography). The volume consists of three works:
  • Almanach Royal, Year M. DCC. LXXXV (1785)
    • Publisher/Printer: Chez D'Houry, Printer and Bookseller to His Highness the Duke of Orléans (Paris, rue Hautefeuille).
    • Details: Presented “By Royal Privilege,” it features a beautiful engraved vignette of the coat of arms on the title page. A veritable administrative directory of the time, it lists the royal family, the high nobility, the clergy, and the major institutions of the kingdom.
  • Court Calendar, Drawn from the Ephemerides, for the Year 1785
    • Publisher/Printer: In Paris, Rue Saint-Jacques, at the Widow Hérissant’s, Printer to the King’s Cabinet, and to His Majesty’s Household and Buildings.
    • Details: Printed specifically “For the Royal Family and His Majesty’s Household.” It contains the astronomical data for the year (the Sun’s position, its rise and set, and the phases of the Moon) as well as a list of the births of the Kings, Queens, Princes, and Princesses of Europe. Engraved vignette on the title page.
  • Charming, Curious, and Useful New Year’s Gifts for the Year 1785
    • Publisher/Printer: By N. Crapart and C.J.C. Durand (Paris).
    • Details: A highly intriguing vintage practical guide containing a historical description of Paris’s monuments, a list of admission fees, tables on the fairs of France, as well as a very interesting and early "Treatise on the Cubation of Aerostats"(echoing the recent inventions of the Montgolfier brothers).
    • Maps: A very complete copy, including its two valuable engraved, fold-out maps printed as inserts: the Map of France and the sought-after Map of the Paris Area.
  • Technical details
    • Period: 18th century, 1785.
    • Format: In-18 (small pocket format, ideal for everyday use at the time).
