Miniature on ivory portrait of the Marquise de Pompadour attributed to Jean Baptiste Massé (1687-1767). Dimensions: 9.5 cm x 7.5 cm + gilt frame.
Jean Baptiste Massé was a pupil of Jouvenet and then Châtillon, and was accepted into the Royal Academy in 1717 with an engraving by Coypel as his reception piece. Massé's masterpiece is the series of engravings of the Grande Galerie of Versailles and the two Salons that accompany it, painted by Charles Le Brun, first painter to Louis XIV, designed by Jean-Baptiste Massé, Painter and Councilor of the Royal Academy of Painting and Sculpture, and engraved under his supervision by the best masters of the time. Begun in 1723 and completed in 1753. Massé also produced, as "miniature painter to the king," numerous miniatures of King Louis XV.
