Small Canvas Depicting Two Putti Mid 18th Century
Pair of allegorical putti - Oil on canvas 18th century - Provenance Palais Hongran, Nice
Charming little 18th-century oil on canvas depicting two winged putti moving against a cloudy sky, in a decorative composition imbued with late Baroque grace.
One of the cherubs, draped in rose, holds a branch while his companion pours water from an urn, an iconography that could evoke an allegory of the seasons, the elements or Abundance. The supple treatment of the flesh, the delicate tones of blue, pink and ochre, and the airy movement of the scene are in keeping with the decorative vocabulary of 18th-century overdoors, woodwork or ornamental panels.
This work shows a lively execution, with an influence from the French or Italian decorative school, in the spirit of Boucher's compositions or the Rocaille workshops.
