Antique Directoire-style Cabinet Or Office Chair, Circa 1795–1799

Elegant armchair in molded beech, carved and re-lacquered, from the Directoire period, retaining a particularly balanced silhouette characteristic of the transition between the Louis XVI and Consulate styles.

The widely curved gondola-shaped backrest is framed by crook-shaped armrests resting on tapered supports with twisted fluting. The legs, also tapered and fluted, are connected to the apron by carved blocks featuring stylized rosettes. The deliberately restrained ornamentation reflects the new aesthetic that succeeded the classical repertoire of the Louis XVI reign, favoring more understated lines and a more assertive architectural style.

The seat is upholstered with an antique petit point tapestry featuring a scattering of polychrome florets set within geometric medallions. This upholstery, likely from the 19th century, harmonizes elegantly with the chair’s understated design.

The chair’s modest proportions and refined design make it equally suitable for a study, a library, or a reception room.
