Porcelain Bisque Plate In The Style Of The Wedgwood Manufactory, Late 19th Century
An oval wall plaque made of bisque porcelain (in the style of jasperware) in the Art Nouveau style, dating from around the late 19th century. It features a white high-relief design that stands out elegantly against a matte almond green or water green background.
The central scene depicts a romantic courtly theme that was very much in vogue during the Belle Époque: an elegant young man in court dress performing the “kiss of the hand” to a young woman wearing a Directoire-style dress and a large hat. The scene is bordered at the bottom by a pair of winged cupids or putti kissing amid foliage. A superb Rocaille-style frame with scrollwork, typical of the Art Nouveau period, completes the piece and features an original hanging hole at the top.
