Portrait Of Louis XIV As A Bust In The Classical Style, After Simon Thomassin, Late 17th Century

A rare and delicate circular drawing executed in black chalk (with highlights in gray ink) on paper, depicting King Louis XIV in profile facing left. The Sun King is depicted in the “classical” style, with a full head of curly hair held back by a ribbon and wearing a laurel wreath.
He wears a Roman-style drapery draped over his torso. This work is a high-quality reproduction based on the famous composition engraved by Simon Thomassin (1655–1733), the king’s official engraver. The fine stone engraving perfectly adheres to the stylistic conventions and solemnity of official portraits from the late reign of Louis XIV.
The drawing is presented in a modern blue mat that highlights its medallion shape.
