Miniature on ivory, in profile to the left, depicting Caroline Jagermann (1777 1848 ) coiffed in the neoclassical fashion, hair up in a bun with soft locks framing the face, on a neutral background ,actress and singer famous in Weimar, a major figure in German cultural life around 1800.
The physiognomy corresponds to known portraits executed by her brother, court painter Ferdinand Jagemann And by Charles Guillaume Alexandre Bourgeois.
Caroline Jagermann was one of the most influential figures at the Weimar court in the late XVIIIᵉ century. An actress and singer, she enjoyed considerable success on the theater stage in Weimar, then one of Germany's major intellectual centers.
She moved in the direct entourage of
Johann Wolfgang von Goethe,
who directed the court theater and exerted a decisive influence on the city's artistic life.
Goethe, a central figure of Weimar classicism, played an essential role in structuring the theater and promoting demanding dramatic art. Caroline Jagermann established herself as one of his most outstanding performers, contributing to the cultural influence of the ducal court.
Parallel to her artistic career, she maintained a lasting relationship with Duke
Charles Augustus, Grand Duke of Saxe-Weimar-Eisenach,
becoming his official companion. This position gave her high social status and influence at court.
