Bronze Medallion Portrait Of Maximilien Robespierre After David d'Angers, 1835
After Pierre-Jean David d'Angers, Portrait of Maximilien Robespierre. Circular bronze medallion with a brown patina depicting Robespierre in profile facing left, wearing a coat with a high collar and cravat characteristic of the late 18th century. The bust, rendered in high relief, stands out against a smooth background. Signed "DAVID" below the bust and dated 1835 integrated into the design. In the 1830s, Pierre-Jean David, known as David d'Angers, embarked on a vast series of portrait medallions dedicated to the great figures of political, literary, and artistic history. Inspired by contemporary effigies of the revolutionary, this portrait of Robespierre belongs to the series the artist dedicated to the major figures of the French Revolution, alongside Mirabeau, Danton, and Marat. These medallions, produced as bronze casts intended to be hung or mounted in frames, contributed to the construction of a visual memory of the Revolution in the 19th century. The recessed reverse and casting irregularities suggest an early 19th-century cast. Comparable examples of medallions by David d'Angers are held in several institutions, notably the Louvre Museum and the Galerie David d'Angers, which house a significant collection of his sculpted portraits. France, model dated 1835. Bronze with a brown patina. Signed: DAVID. Diameter 15 cm
