A Pair Of Important Bronze Vase-candelabras Signed By Ferdinand Barbedienne And Henry Cahieux

An important and refined pair of French vase-candelabra in patinated bronze and gilded bronze, signed “F. BARBEDIENNE” and “HENRY CAHIEUX,” attributable to the prestigious Parisian production of the Maison Ferdinand Barbedienne, second half of the 19th century. The large, ovoid-shaped bodies, characterized by a warm, deep brown patina, are finely decorated in relief with elegant swallows in flight among flowering branches, leaves, and foliage, following a refined naturalistic style with Orientalist influences typical of French decorative arts of the period. Rising from the tops of the vases are tall gilded bronze structures, from which numerous sinuous arms—designed to hold lights—branch out, richly modeled and embellished with plant motifs. The composition culminates dramatically with two large birds with outstretched wings, also crafted in gilded bronze, which lend the ensemble a remarkable vertical momentum and a strong sculptural presence. Particularly refined is the chromatic contrast between the brown patina of the bodies and the brilliant gilding of the mountings, a testament to the high quality of craftsmanship that distinguishes Barbedienne’s work. Each piece rests on a substantial molded quadrangular base in Rosso Griotte marble, complemented by ornamental elements and gilded bronze corner feet. The signatures of Ferdinand Barbedienne and Henry Cahieux attest to the collaboration between the renowned Parisian foundry and one of its most important sculptors and designers.
