Sunderland Garrison Pottery Masonic Pitcher With Pink Glaze, C. 1855

English fine earthenware pitcher of the pearlware type, with a pink “splash” luster, attributed to Garrison Pottery of Dixon, Phillips & Co., Sunderland, circa 1855. It features a globular body, a cylindrical neck, a projecting spout, and a loop handle.

One side bears the printed coat of arms of the Ancient and Honorable Brotherhood of Freemasons, with the motto “Audi, Vide, Tace.” This version, recognizable by its winged cherub supports with calf’s feet, was produced exclusively by Garrison Pottery at the time. The sharpness of the impression is characteristic of early use of the copper plate, before it was transferred to other factories in Sunderland following Garrison’s closure in 1865.

The reverse side depicts the iron-hulled three-masted ship Gauntlet, under the title “THE GAUNTLET CLIPPER SHIP.” Launched in 1853, this ship was depicted in a contemporary engraving, which was later adapted for this Sunderland transfer. After the two subjects were printed in black, they were hand-highlighted with yellow, green, and red iron-based enamels.

The creamy white background is enlivened by pink and coppery-purple luster, repeated in bands on the neck, rim, and spout. The unmarked underside features a fine network of craquelure and retains an old collector’s label bearing the number “170.”

Condition

Excellent condition. A small firing line is visible in the enamel inside the spout; it does not extend into the clay body. The rest is in excellent condition; UV inspection performed.
