A Pair Of Directoire-consulat Period Chairs Characteristic Of The Jacob Workshop

Artist: Jacob
A pair of Directoire-Consulat period chairs in mahogany and walnut stained mahogany.
The openwork backrest featuring a lyre motif is characteristic of the work of Georges Jacob and later of Jacob Frères and Jacob-Desmalter, as is the overall shape of the chairs, with double-baluster or “double pear” front legs—known as “Jacob legs”— and the rear legs in a saber or Etruscan style, extending from the backrest.
Similar models, each with their own variations, are preserved in public collections: for example, the chairs in the dining rooms of the Château de Compiègne, or those in Empress Joséphine’s music room at the Tuileries Palace (see last image).
Striped silk upholstery.
