Set Of Six Louis XVI Period Chairs
A very fine set of six Louis XVI period giltwood chairs with medallion backs. The seat rails and backs are carved with friezes of ribbons and pearls. The remarkable upholstery, partly preserved in its original state, features rich floral embroidery in silk and gold thread. The upholstery on the backs has not been altered since the late 18th century (the cream silk is slightly worn in places at the top of the backs). As for the seats, all the embroidery was removed from the old silk, which must have been very worn, and replaced with cream fabrics, less delicate than silk. The overall effect is stunning. During this restoration, probably carried out about ten years ago, the gilding was entirely redone using traditional methods, with tempera gold leaf, resulting in a patina consistent with 18th-century pieces. The woodwork and joinery are perfectly sound, making these chairs entirely usable.
