An exceptionally impressive, original Japanese samurai armour: Byakudan-nuri hon-kozane murasaki-ito ki-ito dan-odoshi ni-mai-dō gusoku.

Edo period (1603–1868).

The armour is distinguished by its luxurious byakudan-nuri finish, a traditional Japanese lacquering technique that produces a characteristic translucent, amber-brown hue with a subtle golden lustre. This demanding technique lends the entire ensemble remarkable depth, elegance and a commanding presence. The process was extremely costly and time-consuming. Samurai armour finished in byakudan lacquer was therefore generally reserved for high-ranking samurai, warlords (daimyō) and wealthy clan leaders. On the battlefield, such armour was intended not only to demonstrate prestige and wealth, but also to exert a psychological impact on the enemy through the reflections of gold beneath the lacquer.

An important component of the armour is the koboshi kabuto signed by the armourer Saotome Iesada, associated with the renowned Saotome school, whose masters were particularly esteemed for the exceptional quality of their samurai helmets.

A truly outstanding feature is the rare and boldly modelled tengu menpō, with its characteristic elongated nose. Masks of this type survive in considerably smaller numbers than conventional menpō and are particularly striking and highly sought-after elements of samurai armour.

The ensemble presents a harmonious and authentic appearance, with a beautiful historical patina consistent with its age. The combination of a rare tengu menpō, fine byakudan-nuri lacquer and a signed kabuto makes this armour an exceptional collector’s piece, suitable for a discerning private collection or a prestigious exhibition of Japanese art.
