Samurai Armor Yoroi - Uchidachi

Artist: Saotome - Kabuto
Yoroi - Uchidachi

"Modern type" uchidashi dō tōsei gusoku armor, Edo period (1603 - 1868) A 62-plate kobōshi kabutō signed Saotome..., cuirass dō, tsutsu kote, haidate and tsutsu suneate segments are in the style of cultivated noble rust sabiji, very nicely complemented with gold-lacquered elements, executed in the fluted kiritsuke style - five-piece shikoro, four-piece yodarekake and rather smaller tōsei sode. The mempō face mask is a beautiful work of the famous Iwai armorer group .

It is made with yasuri grooves, silver teeth and kagi hooks for lacing the chin strap of the  helmet kabutō no ó. The cuirass is decorated on the front and back in the uchidashi technique (repoussé), chiseled, partially combined with gilding in the nunome zōgan technique. The motif of the decoration is unryū (dragon in the clouds), with the front part of the cuirass depicting a dragon's head, claws, etc., and the back part depicting a dragon's tail with a stylized ken sword. This depiction was called "chimoguri no tatsu", a dragon crawling across the surface. It was believed that the dragon was such a sacred animal that anyone who saw it whole would die. That is why Japanese artists and painters stylized the dragon so that it could not be seen in its entirety, with parts unpainted, covered by clouds, etc.

On the back of the cuirass there is a ring for a decorative tassel agemaki no kan, complemented by finely chiseled decorative fittings fukurin. The armor is generally laced with dark blue odoshi ito. Similarly, on the chest part of the armor there are two kan rings for hanging the commander's signal staff saihai etc.. This is a beautiful, magnificent armor of a high tank samurai, in top condition.
