Reliquary Of Saint Roch Made Of Turned Bone—against The Plague—bearing Cardinal Goossens’ Seal, 19th Century
Elegant circular devotional reliquary made of turned bone, containing a bone relic attributed to Saint Roch, identifiable by the authentic manuscript bearing the inscription “ S. Rochi in P. Patr”, referring to Saint Roch, traditionally invoked as a protector against epidemics and, in particular, the plague (Sancti Rochi in Peste Patronus).
The authentic piece, carefully cut and crafted, features a particularly delicate composition, reflecting the care taken in identifying and presenting the relic.
On the reverse, beneath the lid, is preserved the red wax seal of Cardinal Pierre-Lambert Goossens (1827–1906), Archbishop of Mechelen from 1884 to 1906 and created a cardinal in 1889.
With its character that is both intimate and historic, this small reliquary is a beautiful object of Catholic devotion from the late 19th century, combining the discreet preciousness of the turned bone, the authenticity of the relic, and the tangible testimony of the ecclesiastical authority that guaranteed its authenticity.
