Landscape With A Waterfall And Figures, 17th-century Oil On Canvas In A Period Frame.

Artist: à Etudier

A fine oil on canvas from the Dutch school (?) depicting a beautiful natural landscape; the rocks and lush vegetation form a natural arch from which a striking waterfall cascades. The waterfall is the focal point of the scene; in fact, the figures depicted appear to be engaged in some kind of hydraulic engineering activity, which would be worth exploring further.

Undoubtedly a high-quality painting, in which the artist demonstrates great skill in rendering the intricate details of nature, such as the movement of the waterfall’s water as it crashes into the riverbed and among the rocks, revealing a masterful command of light and shadow.
The right side of the foreground is occupied by large wooden piers supporting a sort of pier; from there, a figure of a monk in a tunic pulls a rope to ring an alarm or signal bell, likely related to the water-related activity. At the foot of the structure are depicted two elderly priests, likely serving as supervisors.

The painting warrants a more in-depth study to identify its place of origin and the artist who created it—an effort certainly worthwhile given the quality evident in the freshness of its brushwork.

Certain elements suggest a Northern European painter active in Italy or one who was somehow influenced by Italian painting, yet with characteristics typical of Flemish painters active in the early decades of the 17th century.

This painting may hold some interesting surprises.

The canvas measures 70 cm x 60 cm.

The painting is set in a splendid gilded and carved frame from the early 18th century, measuring 89 x 78 cm.
