Polychrome Papier Mache Sculpture Representing Mary Immaculate. Central Italy, 18th Century
Artist: à Etudier
Interesting sculpture of the Virgin represented as the Immaculate Conception, an epithet that preserves her from original sin, and therefore, depicted as usual on a crescent moon immersed in the clouds and with the serpent next to her.
At first glance it may seem like a wooden sculpture, but as can be seen from the small hole on the back it is possible to see how this is empty inside and therefore more likely, it was made in papier-mâché, by a modeller of notable quality during the 18th century, probably in an area pertaining to the Papal State.
The sculpture is in good condition, although it has lost the superficial layer of color in some.
The height of the sculpture is 52cm.
We attach a certificate of authenticity to the sale.
