"the Bather" Or "venus In The Bath" Large Biscuit After Christophe-gabriel Allegrain
Artist: D'après Christophe-gabriel Allegrain
Large Biscuit representing "The Bather" or Venus at the Bath after the marble sculpture made by the sculptor Christophe-Gabriel Allegrain, presented at the Salon of 1767 and kept in Paris at the Louvre Museum.
Venus is represented naked, hair in braids and a bun, slightly leaning forward, the right arm descending on her left leg whose foot is placed on a rock, as if to delicately wipe away the drops of water with the towel around her waist.
The original of this sculpture caused a sensation in the 18th century with its eroticism and sensuality, and made such an impression that Louis XV himself acquired it and offered it to Madame du Barry.
This beautiful biscuit with niceproportions, 74cm high by 30cm wide is in perfect condition, it is late 19th or early 20th century (circa 1900) and bears an "Allegrain" signature on the back.
