Venus At Her Toilet, Oil On Panel. Early 19th Century
Artist: à étudier
A splendid oil painting on panel depicting "Venus's Boudoir," likely of French origin. The painting displays all the typical characteristics of early Romantic painting, in which the classical and mythological themes and iconography of the Neoclassical period were reinterpreted with a more conceptual stylistic approach typical of the Romantic and Orientalist styles of the early decades of the century.
The painting certainly warrants a thorough examination, but it is evident that this skilled artist was familiar with—and drew inspiration from—the work and stylistic innovations of painters such as Dominique Ingres, particularly in the rendering of soft contours and the composition of the scene.
A distinctive feature of this panel—and likely a hallmark of the painter, though unfortunately no longer clearly discernible—is the presence of a gold-highlighted sphere applied in the lower left corner of the painting, which appears with certainty to be contemporary with the painting itself.
Please feel free to contact us for further information or clarification on this matter.
The painting measures 48 cm x 36 cm; including the carved and gilded frame (which is not from the same period), the overall dimensions are 64 cm x 52 cm.
A historical certificate of authenticity is included with the sale.
