19th Century French School After Claude Gellée dit Le Lorrain The Disembarkation of Cleopatra

MLD Antiquities Collection: This remarkable painting, inspired by Claude Gellée, is not displayed in our gallery; it is carefully preserved within our private collection.

In an imaginary architecture evoking the splendor of Antiquity, Cleopatra disembarks at Tarsus to seduce Mark Antony and win him over to the interests of Egypt (41 BC). Ancient history is, for the Lorrain landscape artist established in Rome, merely a pretext to enliven one of his sun-drenched seaports.

Our painting is a quality rendition, a fine interpretation of the original painting that Claude Gellée, known as Le Lorrain, created in 1642 and which is now preserved in the Louvre. It is a fine example of the 19th-century French school, presented in an elegantly carved and gilded wooden frame.

Dimensions:

Without frame: Height 18.11 inches, Length 21.26 inches.

With frame: Height 28.35 inches, Length 31.70 inches.

Our painting is in excellent condition. It has recently undergone professional cleaning. Two minor old restorations are noted.

Claude Gellée, known as Le Lorrain (Chamagne circa 1600 - Rome, November 23, 1682): Lorrain painter, draftsman, and engraver, a major figure in classical landscape art.
