The Death Of Cleopatra, Second Half Of The 17th Century. (113 X 152 Cm With Antique Frame)
A splendid oil on canvas, painted by a talented artist of the Roman school who likely worked in Cavalier Perugino’s Roman workshop, given the numerous stylistic and iconographic similarities with his later works.
The beautiful Cleopatra is depicted here in that fateful moment of tormented despair when, overcome by despair, she decides to take her own life by allowing herself to be bitten by the poisonous asp—or Egyptian cobra—which she holds firmly in her right hand.
The sweeping drapery of her garments leaves no doubt as to the painter’s Roman origin and features a vibrant color palette that, taken as a whole, lends charm to the composition.
The canvas, mounted on an antique frame—though with some issues, as it has been re-stretched onto wood over the centuries—is in excellent condition and requires no restoration.
The painting’s dimensions are: 97 cm x 134 cm (canvas); 152 cm x 113 cm (with frame)
We include a certificate of authenticity with the sale, attesting to the painting’s period and authenticity
