Pair Of Architectural Elements Depicting Fantastical Figures, Nordic Art, 15th–16th Century.

Artist: à Etudier
Interesting carved wooden architectural protomes depicting fantastical figures—one female and one male—which served as talismans to ward off evil. It is likely that these elements, dating from the 15th or early 16th century, once adorned a larger wooden architectural complex and were placed at the base of a terrace or entablature, and thus viewed from the bottom looking up. The origin of these elements is certainly Nordic and reflects, in a certain way, Breton and French culture, with Gothic features continuing throughout the 16th century.
