Silver reliquary – fragment of the Holy Cross – Crucis D.N.J.C. - Mexico 19th century

Description

Rectangular reliquary with beveled corners, crafted from silver, featuring elegant engraving with scrollwork and spiral motifs. The perimeter is highlighted by a twisted border and adorned with four openwork ornaments.

Behind glass, the reliquary preserves its original textile composition, edged with a metallic thread braid and centered with a painted radiating cross. Attached to the center of this is a fragment said to be from the Holy Cross, accompanied by a handwritten phylactery bearing the inscription “Crucis D.N.J.C.,” an abbreviation for Crucis Domini Nostri Jesu Christi — “of the Cross of Our Lord Jesus Christ.”

The reverse is secured by red silk threads arranged in a cross, joined beneath a red wax seal bearing a coat of arms, which is still in place.  The frame bears several hallmarks

Condition: Very good overall condition considering its age; natural wear and oxidation. Seal and fastening threads preserved.

In accordance with canon law (can. 1190 §1), this sale pertains solely to the reliquary as an object of sacred art. The relics it contains are not part of the transaction but are included as a courtesy due to their historical and cultural value.
