Based On A Work By Houdon, Terracotta Bust Of Louis XVII, Dauphin Of France

This terracotta bust, modeled after the original by Jean Antoine Houdon, depicts the Dauphin as a child and evokes many emotions for all French people who are aware of his fate.
Houdon (1741–1828), winner of the Prix de Rome and undoubtedly one of the most inventive sculptors of the late 18th century, captured with great delicacy the innocence of the happy child, his hair flowing freely. 
Although often reproduced, the piece we are presenting here is from a rather early edition, likely from the first half of the 19th century, with authentic earthenware and patina. A few minor, insignificant chips on the folds of the garment attest to the age of the earthenware. 
On the back is writen Houdon sc. (Sculptit) stamp (or a label holder).
It is mounted on a simple, perfectly suited marble column base.
