Antique French Snuffbox – Leda And The Swan – Circa 1780–1810

A very beautiful antique snuffbox, likely made in France or continental Europe, dating from the late 18th or very early 19th century, around 1780–1810.

This snuffbox is made of corozo or coquilla (ivory nut) and features exceptionally rich decoration, entirely hand-carved, combining finely crafted reliefs and openwork sections. The lid is adorned with a mythological depiction of Leda and the swan, a subject particularly popular in 18th-century European art and decorative arts.

The box is distinguished by the great finesse of its carving and its partially openwork decoration, executed with particular delicacy. The carved decoration continues all around the snuffbox, and even the underside is richly carved and adorned, reflecting the care taken with the entire object.

The combination of the figurative scene, floral motifs, and openwork ornamentation reflects a particularly refined and demanding carving technique.

The mythological scene depicts Leda and Jupiter (Zeus), the latter having taken the form of a swan. This theme, drawn from ancient mythology, was frequently depicted in European art beginning in the Renaissance.
