Antique French Mirror In Carved And Gilded Wood, Louis XV Period – 18th Century
A beautiful antique French wall mirror dating from the second half of the 18th century, crafted from carved and gilded wood in the Louis XV/Rocaille style.
The mirror features an elegant shape with a curved upper section and rich carved decoration. The frame is adorned with C- and S-shaped volutes, dynamic foliage, and floral motifs characteristic of the Rocaille style. The openwork pediment is richly carved with Rocaille motifs and foliage, centered by a remarkable stylized five-lobed leaf.
The lower section is also beautifully adorned with volutes, sculpted foliage, and a central floral motif.
The reverse reveals the frame’s original wooden construction. The mirror is protected on the back by a black cardboard panel, secured with small nails.
The original gilding has a beautiful, warm patina, with wear that reveals the undercoat and wood in places.
The mirror is in good vintage condition. It shows signs of age, a few minor imperfections, cracks, and areas where the gilding is missing, consistent with its age and visible in the photographs. These marks of time contribute to the object’s authentic character and charm.
A highly decorative antique French mirror, likely made around 1760–1780, retaining a striking presence and a lovely antique patina.
