Large Antique "trough" Trough Compass, 47 Cm, 1800-1825
This object is a through compass, a specific type of magnetic compass used in surveying. This compass is designed to determine magnetic north and is used to precisely align instruments such as a planchette or theodolite with magnetic north. It consists of a long, narrow wooden case with a glass cover. Needle and scale: Inside, a magnetic needle rests on a pivot, flanked by two scales at its ends that typically indicate up to x degrees on either side of zero. These instruments were widely used for making military maps and artillery surveys.
Probely made between 1800-1825,
in a very good condition. Lost some black tape, nothing disturbing.
