Ispahan Carpet, Qajar Dynasty, 144 X 217 Cm, Hand-knotted Wool, Circa 1860–1880, Iran, Museum
Artist: Art Kadjar
Hand-knotted wool Ispahan or Isfahan rug from Iran.
Density of approximately 560,000 knots per square meter.
This collector's piece measures 144 cm wide by 207 cm long.
This Persian rug features exquisite design and is considered one of the finest found in Iran, with a thickness of between 2 and 5 mm.
Museum-quality rug.
Dated to the late 19th century.
The design of this piece features traditional floral motifs found in 17th-century carpets.
These designs can also be found in mosques and on ancient ceramics from the Safavid period.
Two examples bearing a strong resemblance to ours exist:
one at the Golestan Palace Museum,
and the other at the Carpet Museum in Tehran, Iran.
The interlacing patterns clearly feature palm leaves, almond blossoms, and peonies, which are often knotted into these carpets.
The border and its counter-borders are highly sophisticated, with such a delicate arrangement of interlacing patterns and flowers; lilies accompanied by arabesques can be recognized.
The design of the central medallion is unique to these carpets, featuring elegant extensions in the form of halberd-shaped pendants, and the corner motifs demonstrate great artistry.
We find essentially the same medallions in Kachan and early Tabriz carpets.
It is hard to imagine the infinite patience required in the past—and still required today—to create such beautiful pieces.
The rich color palette skillfully combines a brick-orange hue with Persian blue.
The ivory field allows the colors to burst forth with vibrancy.
# Rug knotted during the Qajar Dynasty (Qājār, Qadjar, Qajar; Persian: قاجار)
