Naturalistic Cicada Brooch, Fine Silver, Late 19th Century

This beautiful silver brooch depicts a lifelike cicada. The underside is rendered with the utmost realism, as are the veins on the wings. All the legs are present.
Associated with the Félibrige movement founded by Frédéric Mistral in 1854 to preserve and promote the language and culture of the Pays d’Oc.
Fully functional hinged brooch mechanism and C-clasp.
On the “C” of the clasp, a crab hallmark and a diamond-shaped maker’s mark with the initials J—an unidentified symbol—G.
Beautiful antique patina.
