Early 19th Century Ephebe Brooch, Gold And Enamel Cameo
A lovely cameo carved on clear shell depicting the ephebe Antinous, the young lover and favorite of Emperor Hadrian. His curly hair is held back by a headband.
A fine sculpture with precise details, the background color of the shell is a soft pearl gray against which the pure white of the profile stands out.
The oval setting circled with black enamel is in unhallmarked 18-carat gold, tested with a touchstone.
The C-shaped closure system is perfectly functional.
Note: There are tiny tin spots on the back of the setting that do not appear to cover a repair.
Excellent condition, Empire period circa 1810.
Dimensions 3.9cm x 3.1cm
Weight 7g
