Victorian Pomponne Enamel Swivel Brooch Child Rescued By A Dog
A touching and highly detailed enamel scene adorns one side of this large Pomponne and enamel brooch. A Landseer dog, related to the Newfoundland, clutches a child he has just saved from drowning. It is inspired by an 1856 painting by the English painter Sir Edwin Landseer (1802-1873) titled "Saved" (See last photo). The story behind "Saved" is a reminder of the enduring power of love, loyalty, and companionship between humans and animals.
The brooch swivels, the other side in a medallion under convex glass features a lovely photograph of a lady wearing beautiful jewelry, her hair styled in the fashion of the early 20th century.
The frame of the mount is a twisted pomponne enhanced with 9 balls. Is the lady the child rescued and photographed 40 years later? Quite a possible story behind this beautiful and sentimental brooch!
Very good condition, the enamel has only a very slight crack without consequence on the holding of the object, as well as a small area probably retouched in the dog's coat on the right edge.
England, Victorian period circa 1860.
Dimensions 5cm x 4.5cm x 1.6cm
Weight 29g
