Majolica Plate Depicting A Traveler And Grape Clusters, Borghetto Lodigiano, 18th Century

Artist: Borghetto Lodigiano, Xviiie Siècle
Borghetto Lodigiano, 18th century
Plate with a traveler and grape clusters
Polychrome majolica, Ø 22 cm

Majolica plate with a wavy rim, a circular body, and a slightly undulating edge, decorated in polychrome on a tin-glaze. In the center is a traveler depicted in profile, wearing a wide-brimmed hat, a blue jacket, ochre trousers, and dark boots, shown walking with a traveling staff. The brim is adorned with a design of stylized plant racemes, arranged symmetrically along the edge with floral motifs in shades of green, blue, and yellow.

Light-colored clay body with a slightly ivory-toned white glaze, typical of 18th-century Lodi production. It exhibits slight craquelure in the glaze with some firing lines, consistent with the object’s age and use.

The Borghetto Lodigiano workshop was one of the leading centers of 18th-century Lombard majolica production. Local workshops distinguished themselves for their refined utilitarian ceramics, decorated with folk scenes, isolated figures, landscapes, and plant motifs executed with quick, spontaneous brushstrokes. The vibrant color palette, dominated by blues, greens, yellows, and browns, is one of the distinctive features of Borghetto’s production, which was intended for both the local market and other parts of Lombardy.

Majolica. Body made of fine-grained terracotta.
White tin-glaze coating.
Polychrome high-fire painted decoration.
Fired in a kiln using the traditional 18th-century majolica technique.

Condition
Good condition for its age. Slight craquelure in the glaze, minor surface wear, and some chips along the rim with historic restorations that do not compromise the object’s stability.
